Another Move

Well it is time for Mom to make another move. The infection control Doctor called Michael on Wednesday and said that the blood culture showed that the staff infection in Mom's blood was still strong and that there was also a yeast infection in her blood. These two work together to fight the antibiotics. So the antibiotics are no longer effective, even though these are the strongest ones they use. The infection on the heart valve is what is keeping the infection going and Mom is not a candidate for open heart surgery to replace the valve. So the Doctor said that there is nothing else that can be done. Also the internal med Doctor agreed and it was suggested that hospice could be the next step. Yesterday the antibiotics were stopped. Today when Beth and I got here, Michael picked us up at the airport and went to Kindred. With Mom's severe illness and for her comfort, it was agreed that it would be best for Mom to go to a hospice house.

Mom has been moved to the Emery J. Lilge Hospice House run by Community Hospice on the Huguley Hospital campus. The Phone Number is 817-615-2150 or 877-689-6889
The address is:
Emery J. Lilge Hospice House
310 Medpark Circle
Burleson, Tx 76028

Please pray for Mom's peace and comfort! Thank you all for your prayers!

Mom is doing a little better her white blood count is lower almost normal. However she did get two more pints of blood this weekend. She is talking some days better than others. Beth and I are going down there this weekend to see what we can do. We will be there Oct 24th - Oct 28. Please keep praying for Mom!

Tuesday, October 14, 2008

Infection Continues

Mom's infection was back yesterday with the white blood count at 12,900. Today it was 12,100 and she is running a fever of 100.1 F. Her bedsore will be debrided (removes dead skin) of an area about 1-1/4" round and 3/16" deep. This will be done there at Kindred. She was only talking a little bit today and had a cramp in her leg. Please keep praying for her!

Olive Garden

Mom has settled into Kindred Hospital room 200. On Tuesday she had a blood culture done and today the culture shows that the antibiotics are working quite good. Praise the Lord! tonight mom told Michael that she went to Olive Garden today! and was at the college in the morning. So at least she is talking better! The infection control doctor says she will be on the antibiotics at least 4 weeks and maybe 6 weeks. and then she can go back to Huguely Rehab Place. So please pray for healing and her peace of mind with the Lord.

Back To Kindred

Mom did have here hair cut and styled On Wednesday and she was moved to Kindred Hospital Wednesday night. She was moved there instead of Huguley Place because of the 3 antibiotics she is and and the need for a higher level of care. Please Pray for her.

Heart Valve

Mom is doing pretty good considering all that has been going on. She does have a bicuspid heart valve infection. Because of the MRSA which is extremely resistant to antibiotics she is on three antibiotics and will continue to be on them for 6 - 8 more weeks. On Thursday Mom will probably me moving back to the Huguley Rehab and Nursing Place. Also On Wednesday Oct 1st a hairstylist is coming to the hospital to give her a cut and style. I'm sure she will like that! Mom has been talking a little bit but it seems that her eyesight is not so good. Please continue to pray for her peace and healing!

TEE

Today Mom had a TEE endoscopy to look at the back of her heart. The doctors suspected that a valve might be infected and that is what is causing the blood infection/MRSA. At first they tried to go down her throat but with her awake it didn’t work. So they put her out and did the procedure in the operating room. We only know a little but they did find something on one of the valves which either caused an infection or is the result of an infection. Since this is an infection it seems now she might be on antibiotics the rest of her life. Please continue to pray for her comfort, peace and healing!

Monday, September 22, 2008

Still at Huguley

Mom is slowly beating her infection her white blood cell count it is down to 12,000. The infiltration in her lungs is almost gone and she has been talking to the Doctor which is good. Mom will probably be in the hospital for a few more days. Her bedsores are all better and her blood count is hanging in there. Please continue to Pray!

Sunday, September 14, 2008

New Blood

Mom had to have some more blood 2 units, no indication of where it is going! She has been talking a little bit better and has a better mattress. Please keep praying for her!

Friday, September 12, 2008

Progress

Mom has had a few better days talking and being aware of what is going on. They thought she might of had a blood clot in her arm but after they did a Doppler scan they didn't see one. The Doctor says she is doing better than he thought she would and will keep her in the hospital for 4 or 5 more days. He say when they moved her from Kindred to The Huguley Rehab they didn't do anymore antibiotics so the MSR infection she had was never really subdued and it came back. This time he will make sure it is subdued before being moved again. She has had some respiratory therapy and that has gone well. The doctor thinks she might be able to eat again here next week so let’s pray for that.

Doing Better!

Praise the Lord! Mom was talking quite a bit yesterday say she missed Michael and hadn't seem him for a while and telling him she is Hot! She said she also hadn't had a Dr. Pepper for quite a while!. This is good to she her communicating it also looks like her infections are going away. Pleases keep praying, God does answer prayers!

Back at Huguley

Last night they checked Mom's blood sugar and they measured close to 500 and they couldn't get it down so they took her to the Emergency room at Hugely there they only measured it to be 260. Don't know why the big difference! Anyhow they checked here out some more and found another urinary track infection, and a start to pneumonia. Today they noticed a small bedsore so they ordered a special mattress. Waiting on an update from the doctor. So now she is in room 529 at Huguley. Please pray for her comfort!

Friday, August 29, 2008

New Place

Mom has been moved to the Huguley Nursing and Rehab Center http://huguleynursing.com/
Phone # 817-551-5900 in Room 117, 301 Huguley Blvd . Burleson, TX 76028.

Her infections are cleared up - Praise the Lord! Today before she left Kindred, occupational therapy worked with her and she was sitting up and talking a bit. The plan is to have her here for a while to see if there is improvement. She is keeping her same Doctor, Tim Allen, which will be good for continuity. Please continue to pray for her and as she always prays - help her to be a blessing to someone.

Move

Today Mom might be moving to the Hugely Nursing Home we are working out the details and sorry for the short notice.

Monday, August 25, 2008

Slow Progress

There are really no changes. Mom is talking just a little bit and seems to be aware a little bit of what is going. She is still on antibiotic and getting occupational therapy. Please continue to prayer for her healing!

Visit

Mom has two infections going on VRE and MSRA, she will be on an antibiotic program for the next three weeks. Her fever is gone and so is the nausea/vomiting. The feeding tube rate was reduced so that helped with the nausea. Saturday night Mom received a blood transfusion, her hemoglobin was 8.0 and the she received two units of blood. Today it was up to 11.9. They are doing some testing to find where the blood is going (the lab lost one sample)

In the afternoons mom is more alert and talks a little bit. She has said our names and she even tried writing her name. Occupational therapy visited her today and noticed some real improvements with her holding her head up and her balance as she sat on the edge of the bed. The OT therapist "Becky" is a real blessing and had a wonderful prayer with us today! Beth and Glenn had been visiting her the last four days and it was a good visit. (sorry for the lack of updates, no Internet) We had a good time and Mom did recognize us for the most part. Please keep praying!

Tuesday, August 12, 2008

Set Back

Yesterday Mom started getting an infection. Today she has a high Temperature of 102 deg and has been throwing up! There is a concern that it might be a septic infection (blood poisoning). She has been on antibiotics for several days now due to an urinary tract infection. There was a blood culture done today and hopefully on Wednesday we will know more. On Sunday Mom was talking good and was having fun watching the Olympics with Michael. We don't know what happened! Please have a special prayer for Mom.

Saturday, August 9, 2008

PT

On Friday Mom had a good session with Physical Therapy! they said they will get occupational therapy to start doing there thing again. She has been talking a bit more and on Monday the are to do another swallow test Michael says she has been drinking Dr. Pepper just fine :-). Keep praying!

Talking

Up till now not much has changed. Today however, Mom is talking a bit more, it seems that she is able to think, but she is not able to get the words out. When asked questions, her answers make sense. She still shakes her head yes and no a lot. She says the hospital is taking good care of her. The case workers have a meeting on Tuesday and Michael will be able to attend so hopefully we will know more tomorrow. Thank you for your continued prayers!

Kindred Again,

Mom was moved to Kindred last Friday she made the trip good. She is now in Room 212. The Phone Number is 817-346-0094 address is 7800 Oakmont Blvd, Ft. Worth, TX 76132.
Mom has not been talking the last few days. She does seem to know people and what is going on her back hurts her from being in bed for so long! Today physical therapy did her range of motions and tomorrow some speech therapy to try working on her swallowing. No plans for testing or any procedures so that is good she needs a break from all of that. There are no infections so at least she is stable. Please keep praying for her continued healing!

Success

Mom has the tube put in her stomach today successfully, not much bleeding. She will be at HEB another day or two and then back to the Kindred Rehab. Keep Praying!

Tuesday, July 22, 2008

Tubage

Mom temperature and white blood cell count was down today, praise the Lord! The X-ray's that Mom had taken a day or two ago came back OK. She was moved out of ICU yesterday. The EEG results are back and I don't understand them, but something indicates she is thinking slow and might be susceptible to small seizures??? That might not be quit right but close. Anyhow, Mom has had a sore throat from the NG tube so tomorrow they will be putting a tube directly into the stomach. Then within a day or two she will be going back to Kindred Rehab Hospital. Stay tuned to the Lord and keep praying for Mom!

Sunday, July 20, 2008

911

Today Mom said to the Nurses "Call 911 and get me out of here!". She is talking a little but is not really recognizing anyone. All of her lab work is good and she was moved out of ICU to PCU. However the Doctors do not really know what is going on. Tomorrow morning they will do a spinal tap to see if the spinal fluid is showing any infection which wouldn't show up in the normal lab work. Today she had another EEG still know the results of it or the first one they did at Hugely. Please continue to prayer for her and the Doctors so they know how to help her!

ICU @ HEB

Mom has been in ICU at HEB and it is going OK. Last night they put a NG tube in for feeding and 5 minutes later she pulled it out. So today they also did a Catscan and while she was sedated they did the NG tube again and it has stayed. She really has not been talking but if the medical staff asks a question she will usually answer it. They will not be able to do an MRI for 6 weeks because of the stent. Mom will be in the ICU a couple more days. Please keep her uplifted in your prayers!

Friday, July 18, 2008

1st Stent Done!

Mom did have a stent done today, Praise the Lord the they got the stent in successfully! The doctors first did the arteriogram on her left carotid artery it was about 85% blocked and the right one about 80% which is better than was indicated with the sonogram. They did sedate her a bit more because she was not holding still and then they put in the stent. The Doctors said it went as well as it could be expected - it was difficult due to the age and condition of her arteries. They also found the her brain does have atherosclerosis which may have caused this stroke to begin with instead of the carotid artery. She is now in the ICU at HEB and should be in there about a day and then to a regular room for a few days and then back to the Kindred Rehab Hospital. Please keep praying for her healing and comfort.

HEB

Today Mom was moved to HEB (Hurst Euless Bedford) Hospital, this was after Dr. Angelis saw her and the decided to go ahead with doing a stint. So on Friday sometime between 10 am and 2 pm they are going to do a arterial gram??? and if that goes well with Mom cooperating and lying still they will go ahead with the Stint which usually happens. If it does not happen, then on Monday under heavier sedation they will do the stint. At HEB it is Dr. Iyed Rasdan a cardiologist will be doing the stint and arterial gram. Today she was not talking or eating much but seemed to understand the need for her to cooperate during the process. So please have some prayers for Mom to keep her calm from 10 am through the procedure and to be with the doctor.

Wednesday, July 16, 2008

Back at Hugely

Yesterday Mom was not talking very much or eating much of anything they decided not to do the feeding tube yet. Since she was not to talkative the decided to send her back to Hugely for on Thursday they will do an EEG on the brain to see if there are damaged areas from lack of oxygen. Please send up your prayers for Mom and the Doctors so they know what to do! See is in Room 422.

Tuesday, July 15, 2008

Quiet

Mom has been real quiet today, her eyes are bright but not saying anything. The latest MRI results show no change since the original one a month ago which is good. She had her last dose of antibiotics today. Her lab work shows most everything normal except ammonia and the white blood cell count is slightly high at 10.5 so the infections are practically gone. She has not eaten today much either and we just found out that she has not had a BM in 5 days! The silly nurses have not been telling us this! They will only answer questions and not tell us what is going on. If we do not know enough to ask the question they don't tell! sad sad sad! Please pray for Michael as he is dealing with all of this mess and continue to pray for Mom and her comfort and strength in her healing!

4 weeks

It has been 4 weeks since Mom had her stroke and heart attack it has definitely been a roller coaster ride. The nurse said today that she thinks she is getting better every day. Last Friday Mom had another MRI no results yet. Since Mom has not been eating well she will probably be getting a feeding tube on Monday. On Friday she was talking fairly well and commented on the beautiful day. Thank you for the Continued Prayers! God Bless!

Thursday, July 10, 2008

Anointing

Today Mom was anointed by Pastor Mike Tucker.

"Is any one of you sick? He should call the elders of the church to pray over him and anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise him up. If he has sinned, he will be forgiven. James 5:14-15 NIV

Mom did have a good afternoon and was talking pretty well. However she is still not eating well and there is a possibility that Monday she will get a feeding tube. Friday she goes in for another MRI.

Thank You for your continued prayers. With God's help Mom is recovering! As a friend of Mom's stated "Nurses make tough patients too."

Tuesday, July 8, 2008

Holding on

Mom has had a rough weekend. Since last week when she pulled out her catheter she got a serious urinary track infection. Since then she has gotten a staph and ecoli infection. Starting Sunday she was only eating very little and yesterday she got a pik line. Today she did not eat much at all and is really not talking, unlike Mom. Michael took her for a wheel chair ride out in the sunshine today as well. The CAT scan from last week showed nothing new, so that is good news. This Thursday another MRI. The doctors as saying they will need to wait for the antibiotics to take care of the infections before they can do the carotid artery surgery. Please continue to pray for her she has calmed down a bit, but she is still very sick. Thank you for all of your continued prayers.

Thursday, July 3, 2008

July 3rd

Mom is in Kindred hospital room 208. Yesterday she had a CATscan, no results yet. Today she has had occupation and physical theraphy. She has beend feeding herself some and likes yogurt and pudding. Please keep her in your prayers.

Rehab round 2

Mom pulled out her catheter last night because she is so restless and continues to fight to get out of there. She is just not understanding why she is in the hospital. It looks like Tuesday the Rehab Hospital will evaluate her again and move her Tuesday or Wednesday. Michael continues to visit Mom daily and tries to calm her down and explain the situation to her. Please keep Mom and our family in your prayers!

Sunday, June 29, 2008

New Room

Last Night Mom was moved to the 5th floor she is in Room 512 at Huguely. Last night it sounds like she had a good night she was not restrained. She ate a good breakfast with some help but after that she was ready to go so she did need to be restrained again. Physical therapy is scheduled for today so that should help. Praise the Lord she had a peaceful nights rest!

Saturday, June 28, 2008

No Change

Mom is still in CVICU she has been very combative. Today she has eaten apple sauce and jello but she is still sedated abit. There is a possibility of her being moved to the Progressive care unit today. Please pray for her peace of mind and healing!

Wednesday, June 25, 2008

Waiting

Mom ended up in ICU at Huguley and today she had another MRI that took 2-1/2 hours! Don't know the results yet. Tonight she was peaceful and resting but has not had anything to eat all day. She has been drinking some but has be sedated for the most part. They are looking into the possibility of accelerating the carotid artery surgery. Please Keep praying the Lord is working.

Tuesday, June 24, 2008

Set Back

Mom spent less then 24 hours at the Kindred Rehab Hospital. Her heart slowed down to 40 bpm and also had low blood press. She was sent back to Huguley ER for further evaluation. They did another cat scan, 2 ekg's and a chest x-ray and blood work - with no direct indications of what caused her heart to slow down. It is back to normal for her now she was readmitted to the progressive care unit. There are some continuing PVC's happening but normal other than that. We will wait and see. Keep Praying!

Monday, June 23, 2008

Rehab

Mom has moved to Kindred rehab - She is there in room 304B. The address is:
Kindred Hospital
7800 Oakmont Blvd
Ft. Worth, TX 76132
www.kindredhospitalfwsw.com
Ph 817-346-0094 ext 3042

Walking

Today the occupational therapist came in and got Mom up and walked to the bathroom! She is doing much better today praise the Lord! There is a good chance Shirely will be discharged today and go to the rehab hospital - Kindred in Ft. Worth. She will then be there for a couple of weeks.

Sunday, June 22, 2008

Hospital Food - Yum!

The Doctor is in - Her first question, "Is he going to dismiss me?" - Well she is not ready for that. She had oatmeal for breakfast which she didn't like! said it was awful! Mom's short term memory is not there. She can remember up to las Sunday and even maybe Monday. However she still does not understand why she is in the hospital. Well it looks like she will need to have surgery in a couple of weeks on her carotid artiries. Between now an then she will be in the hospial for a few more days. Then to a rehab hospital "Kindred", for several weeks. Our one big concern is that mother is at a high risk category to have another stroke. Please keeping Praying.

Milkshake

Mom just got her first food a Chocolate Milkshake! This was after she passed a swallowing test. She has been very alert and many visitors today being Sabbath have come by to wish her well. She is back to giving orders:-) for food and what everelse she needs.

A New Day

Mom woke up good this morning. She is much more alert and recognizes people good. She had a bath this morning and she is talking a lot. She said she did not sleep very good but she was resting very good when we came in. She remembers she was supose to go to Austin this week. She keeps asking for some 7-Up. However she is still NPO having a difficult time swallowing. They will be doing some throat/speech therapy on Monday. She wanted a comb for her own hair and she did it very good!

Friday, June 20, 2008

Out of ICU

Mom has been moved out of ICU into Progressive Care Unit, she is smiling :-). She is talking fairly good and moving everything she sat up on the edge of the bed today. However she does have a problem swallowing and can not have food or water. They tried to put a feeding tube down her throat but could not get it there. We will have to wait until Monday to see the next step.

Update June 20

It took Mom a while to wake up this morning. She asks who all is here. I asked her what color shirt I was wearing and she did say a blue plaid which was right! A few minutes later she told Michael he had a pretty Blue shirt! - Please keep Praying! God is Wonderful!

Thursday, June 19, 2008

Update - June 19

Shirley is responsive and is talking - She wanted to go to Taco Bell today:-) and "Get me out of Here" were common statements. She does have movement in all of her extremities and is slightly weak on the left side. Her carotid arteries have major pluggage.
